Tudor Submariner Snowflake Ref. 9411/0

e Tudor Submariner is a renowned line of diving watches manufactured by Tudor, a Swiss watchmaking company. The history of the Tudor Submariner is closely tied to its parent company, Rolex.

In 1954, Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf established Tudor as a more affordable brand, offering high-quality timepieces with similar design and craftsmanship as Rolex watches. The Tudor Submariner was first introduced in 1954 with the reference number 7922. It was designed as a tool watch for professional divers, featuring a water-resistant Oyster case, a rotating bezel to track elapsed time underwater, and luminescent markers for improved visibility in low-light conditions.

The early models of the Tudor Submariner closely resembled Rolex Submariners, as they shared many design elements and cases. However, Tudor utilized different movements and materials to keep the costs more accessible to a broader audience.

Over the years, the Tudor Submariner evolved, with various references and improvements made to enhance its functionality and aesthetics. One significant development came in 1969 with the introduction of the Tudor Submariner reference 7016, featuring crown guards for enhanced protection.

In the 1980s, Tudor introduced the Tudor Submariner “Snowflake” reference 94110, which gained iconic status due to its unique snowflake-shaped hands and square hour markers. This particular example of the Sub Date is in excellent condition, featuring an impressive case and beautiful colored tritium blocks.

The bracelet on this watch is younger than the watch itself giving it a very nice and sturdy wearing experience.

Backstory

When Rolex itself was still an up-and-coming brand, its founder Hans Wilsdorf envisioned a sister brand that would allow him to release more affordable watches. As an avid Anglophile, Wilsdorf named his new brand Tudor, and registered the company in 1926.

The recipe was simple: The high quality cases and bracelets from Rolex, fitted with off-the-shelf movements, allowing for a lower price point. This is why you will often find Tudor watches with Rolex logos all over the case back and bracelet. They weren’t just the same design, they were the same actual parts.

From the 1960’s onwards, Tudor was adopted by several armed forces, among which the US Navy and the French Marine Nationale. Their elite troops were outfitted with rugged Tudor Submariners. These are now highly collectible and are fast approaching Rolex Subs in price. Something you will not find anywhere in Rolex’s catalogues is the lady-size Submariner; a Tudor exclusive.

You will find many models within Tudor’s line-up that share a lot of their platform with Rolex. There are, however, models that are unique to Tudor only. The current collection shares no parts with its crowned sibling, but you will also find vintage Tudors with completely unique aesthetics.

So whether you are after a slight variation on the familiar Rolex designs or something completely different, Tudor has got you covered. It is one of those brands that are quickly becoming more and more appreciated by aficionados. And for good reason. There is a whole lot to love here!
