Rolex Datejust Ref. 1600 Full set
A lot is already written about Datejust and its history. A dear colleague of ours Thomas van Straaten wrote a book about The vintage Datejust 1945-1990, a buyer‘s & collector‘s guide. We highly recommend it.
The first steel version of the Datejust made its debut in 1957, up till then they wear only available in 18k gold. Ref 1600 is rarer than ref 1601/1603, the smooth bezel differs from the fluted bezel on the other refs. 1600s are relatively unusual and are truly the most simplistically elegant of the line.
This particular Datejust ref 1600 dates from 1966 and has a stunning rare dial, almost lavender. One of the first models with baton hands and baton markers, a trademark of the mid-sixties. Equipped with a riveted Oyster bracelet, giving it a more sporty look.
Powered by the caliber 1570, the replacer of the caliber 1560. In those days very innovative, with a power reserve of 42 hours. Movements Swiss made with chronometer certification are tested by a non-profit organization Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres, COSC. Caliber 1570 is such a movement and is COSC certified.
Sometimes the first owner of a watch is very precise, they keep all paperwork and boxes for many years. Our Datejust had such an owner. The original box, Rolex papers, and COSC come with the watch. A ‘full’ full set.

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic watch designs ever made. We try not to use the term “iconic” too liberally, but it is surely justified here. Launched back in 1945 as the Ref. 4467, the design has been only marginally updated every now and then. And it has looked fresh and current ever since.
When it comes to vintage, two generations of Datejust are particularly popular; the Ref. 16xx and the later five-digit references. The 16xx models were made from the fifties until roughly 1978 and feature a beautifully dimensional pie-pan dial. Many of these came on folded jubilee bracelets and they did not yet feature a quickset date.
When the reference was updated to five digits around 1978, the pie-pan dial was replaced by a flat dial. The caliber was updated to now feature a quickset date. A decade later, in 1988, a new update saw the introduction of a sapphire crystal. For us, this is where vintage Datejust becomes modern Datejust.
Countless variations can be found. Different bezels, bracelets, dial colors, sizes and materials. The Datejust is one of the most beloved and versatile watches around. If you are looking for a one-watch-collection, that works equally well with shorts as it does with a three-piece suit, the Datejust is probably a pretty safe bet!
