Heuer Autavia Ref. 11063

The Heuer Autavia, the first chronograph with a rotating bezel.

This Heuer has a traditional sporty style, with two sub-dials and a rotating bezel. Heuer was the first brand to ever put a rotating bezel on a chronometer, which made the brand and this model specifically more popular and collectible.

This specific ref.11063 is executed in a 42mm stainless steel case and features a beautiful light grey dial. The bracelet of the watch is quite a jubilee, giving it a slight elegance.

All in all, Heuer chronographs are a very specific market and this is definitely an interesting option when buying one. Visit our store and enjoy a cup of coffee when we tell you more about Heuer precision watches.

Backstory

What’s in a name? Well, in this case everything really. Autavia is an aggregation of Automotive and Aviation. Two themes you do not typically see united in one watch. But Heuer did it rather convincingly.

Heuer is arguably the biggest watch brand in motorsports history. The Autavia name was already introduced in 1933, in the form of a dashboard clock for both cars and airplanes. It would become a line of wristwatches in 1962.

The key selling points were a chronograph and a rotatable bezel, available in several different versions. There were, among others, versions for tracking a second timezone and one for setting minute markers, similar to a dive time bezel.

The design would become a racing icon, spearheaded by the reversed panda layout of two or three white subdials on a black dial. It was put into the public conscience by F1 drivers such as Jochen Rindt, Jacky Ickx, Emerson Fittipaldi and Gilles Villeneuve. You know you have succeeded in creating a specialist tool watch when such prominent figures rely on your product.

Collectors specify three main eras of vintage Heuer Autavia watches. The first generation came in 38mm cases and were fitted with broad dagger hands. The second generation, from 1966 onwards, featured smaller sub dials and baton hands. Finally, in 1968, a completely new case design was introduced with a broader bezel and more angular shapes.

From 1969 onwards, the Autavia was fitted with the important Caliber 11. One of three contestants for the very first ever integrated automatic chronograph movement. The others were Seiko and Zenith. While the Zenith El Primero was introduced to the public before the Cal. 11, it was the Heuer (in a conglomerate with Breitling, Hamilton-Buren and Dubois-Depraz) that was first to market. It is unknown whether Seiko may have beaten them to their Japanese home-market though, so it is generally accepted that it was a tie between the three parties.

Throughout the seventies, many colorful variants followed. And then, after Heuer became Tag Heuer in 1985, a re-edition was launched in 2006.

If you make sure never to miss a race on the F1 calendar, a Heuer Autavia might just be the perfect watch for you!
