Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3445

Wow” is the first thing that came to mind when this beauty entered the quarters of AWco.

This specific PP ref.3445 is a very special watch that does not enter our store very often. What makes this Calatrava special is that traditionally, the Calatrava was made to be a time-only manual wound watch. Patek changed the game plan when they introduced the ref.3445 in the late 1960’s as this watch was produced as an automatically winding watch with a date complication, which is totally contrary to the initial blueprint of the Calatrava!

This specific ref.3445  is executed in 18k white gold , with a silver sunburst dial, original crown, mirror stick markers, and carries the famous 27-460 caliber. The 35mm case width of this watch makes  watch extremely versatile. Wearing t-shirt and jeans or going fully three-piece! We just know that this watch feels at home on every wrist.

To make it even better, we are very happy to offer this watch with a service box, service etui, and Patek service papers from September 2022.

We love it! Everyone Loves it! You will love it! Experience this watch at Reestraat 3 Amsterdam and we will tell you all about it!

Backstory

In 1932, the year in which brothers Charles and Jean Stern acquired Patek Philippe, the name of the manufacture’s prestigious symbol, the Calatrava cross, was given to a watch collection. The first true ‘family’ of watches Patek Philippe had created, the Calatrava quickly became a classic and is still regarded today as the brand’s most iconic collection.

The design was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, a German school of Arts based on the belief that ‘less is more’ and ‘form follows function’. Since the purpose of a watch is to tell the time, these principles discouraged any embellishments which could detract from the time-telling.

The result was a watch that was at once beautiful and practical. Presented in a round case with a flat bezel and simple dial with baton indices, the art of omission in the debut model Ref. 96, came to characterize the Calatrava’s understated, yet timeless style.

The design has become a template for other brands. A simple, minimalist dress watch with a sub-dial for the seconds at six o’clock, is often referred to as a Calatrava watch, regardless of the brand. So while Patek did it first, it is perfectly reasonable to stumble upon a JLC Calatrava or a Vacheron Constantin Calatrava.
