Patek Philippe Ref. 5009 Gondolo

Inspired by the Art Deco movement of the early twentieth century, the Gondolo collection is sleek, stylized, and streamlined. The collection is named after the Rio de Janeiro-based company Gondolo & Labouriau, for whom Patek Philippe produced the famous “Chronometro Gondolo” watches from 1902 to 1927.

Around 1927 there was ‘The Gondolo Gang’, a very elite group of collectors. The 180-member club comprised of the Brazilian elite and membership required a commitment to purchase a Gondolo & Labouriau-commissioned Patek Philippe pocket watch retailing at 790 Francs.

However, members were not asked to pay for the watch in full but rather to sign up for the “Plano do Club Patek Philippe System.” The system was set up to bill each member 10 Francs for 79 weeks. But, to keep things interesting, Gondolo & Labouriau held weekly lotteries to relieve one lucky winner of their future payments. As a result, these weekly lottery drawings became lavish picnics where members proudly wore large straw hats emblazoned with PATEK on them.

Early 1990s Patek launched the Gondolo again. We present you a Gondolo of the year 1996 with original papers. On a beautiful green Croco strap from our private label. The Arabic numerals are one of the Art Deco-inspired things with characterizing this watch. 18K yellow gold case with original 18k Patek buckle, manual winding….
